Love this anecdote from Scott Alexander where he didn’t think much of the book initially but then one of his clients read it and her severe trauma symptoms vanished https://x.com/visakanv/status/1652548739876409344?s=46&t=1ZW6Ake4qChPZxyoRqBUQw
we are still in the early days
Tangentially curious about your approach to switching to new devices: do you port everything over? Fresh start? Vaguely feel like you might have mentioned before. (I personally like to Fresh Start it)
depends on the context I think it’s a good info hygiene principle like crediting artists, linking to sources, etc but it depends; when is it a passing influence vs the source material etc
ha, if I knew I’d already be pursuing it. I have some vague senses but nothing concrete yet
I don’t really have an ordered list; I hope to be continually surprised in beautifully unexpected ways
Search, folders, threading. Nothing fancy. I actually forget and overlook a lot of stuff
It did! Was a great time to branch out and connect with people. But maybe these things happen in cycles and now it’s time to consolidate
I feel like we are on the cusp of a cultural reorientation. Maybe essayists always feel like this but I feel this much more strongly now than a decade ago
Yea FC is a nice start in something unknowable, I’m glad it exists and I root for it to grow and develop as beautifully as it can
I wouldn’t say it’s wrong per se, it’s just very, very difficult to do correctly, and the difficulty increases tremendously the faster/sooner you try to do it. So imo the wise approach is to do it slowly, ie find the right ppl to do a cooperative with over 10-20 years
if Twitter dies I don’t think I’ll seek out a Twitter replacement; i spent several years really going hard on Twitter (which was great, I don’t regret it), but I’d rather restructure my life altogether. I can still contact people on Instagram etc for basic 1-1 social needs; beyond that I’d write essays, make
it’s messy, I don’t know. FC right now has some good vibes with optimists etc but it’s also inevitably kinda closed off for now. My favorite thing about Twitter is (was?) how global and universal it was. Sad to think that there may never quite be another Twitter when it declines. I’m still clinging to it
I think I could comfortably-ish take on 10x, maybe 100x the power I have rn. I mean it will be a challenge but I think I’m well-prepared for it. But I’m not in a rush to seek it out, I simply continue my training and receive it as it comes
working on my essays, I’m trying to figure out how to convey a fresh way of seeing/being that people find incredibly compelling, for culture to reorient around. “Friendly Ambitious Nerd” is in the correct ballpark but not the full picture, I’m still missing something. Iterating
in some sense my big dream all along has been to build a truly fantastic media organisation. I’m doing a 1-man version of it for now. it’s not worth formalizing beyond that because the unit economics doesn’t work, needing to pay $ etc distorts the incentives (which is why no really amazing media org exists)
