If we changed the Warpcast default feed to Highlights with 10x casts -- with a boost for new users -- and made Following the 2nd tab, what would your reaction be? 1. Glad 2. Neutral 3. Sad 4. Mad
3. I'm guessing here as well, the active daily users would probably not like it but the new users would like that they're discovering interesting content.
Good in the short-term Risky in the medium term, if different clients don’t gain adoption
3. Please keep following as the first tab. About the boost, I think that would be fine in the short term.
3. Spent a ton of time building following so I’m not sure how the algo for highlights would work. But the way it works right now, it would be hard to leverage. I think making the first tab being algo driven is important but I think it needs improvements before its the main one
3. Feels too early for vanilla algo feeds / not differentiated enough. Will be inevitable when network reaches a certain size and average following exceed dunbar’s. Would be cool to be able to collect casts and have those get boosts both from FC and marketplaces/NFT trending leaderboards.
Somewhere between 3 and 4 - I'm annoyed every time I open Twitter and have to swipe to the Following feed
1 - Glad for the future of Farcaster by driving more usages/discovery Big caveat though: would like for a toggle to switch it back in the settings for anyone upset by the change.
I'd say #2. But what I really want is for the "following" feed to rank casts in chronological order with an option to filter out replies.
3 or 4. Would like to keep Following as the default. I'd check a 'New' feed regularly though and say gm👋 to new users.
2, but would rather something like: the first 5-10 casts in my feed were highlights and everything below that was casts from Following
My guess is we don’t really know how we will react. A/B test it and see how we behave.
2 Although I think you should start laying the foundations for people to configure those tabs, and their ordering, with Warpcast defaults (Highlights, Following) and third party custom algos like what Bluesky just released.
3 I rather check a following feed or a new feed. default should show me casts from people I interacted with in the past (my curated network)
2 cents (which is worth just about that) You can do this and it may help around the edges with some new user activation but it’s not a panacea. It would be better to test it with some new users vs forcing it on all users, or at least build in remembering which tab users prefer or used... longcast.jam.so/jjFsNr
Mastodon is neat in that there is an onboarding culture that encourages first timers write intro posts with hashtags and to follow those hashtags. That means that people with similar interests find and welcome each other. Its part of the app but also the culture. No algo tweaks necessary.
Make a new tab called “New”? 2. Don’t really care about the default order of following or default feed
1. Because new users have a 10x harder time coming out from the slums of farcast
Hard to say until I’ve tried it. My take on Highlights: it’s good on the first read, then stays stale for ~24 hours.
Why not give ppl a choice in the settings to choose their preference. Personally I prefer to see my following first before any highlights
5. Meh Focus your energy on improving the algorithm for surfacing good content within a users immediate social graph (following/links/reactions), not global highlights. If you nail that, then you keep what’s great about this community as you scale users.
If you made it really easy to change the default feed then it would be fine
No please... I hate this in Twitter. I decide whom to follow for a reason. This is the way
2, but switching tabs should be persisted for the next session i.e. if I switch to following, next time I open the app I don’t want to have to switch again
3 slightly but ok as long as app remembers my chosen feed on next open or let’s me choose my default.
i'd give it a shot, i switch between "for you" and "following" on twitter and i'm left unsatisfied fully with either but i would love to see boosts for new users (nc bot is great and i think everyone should follow it)
1. Glad but would love the app to remember which tab I’m on so if I prefer the following feed it will open to it when I open the app (ie if I was using it last time I used the app)
if the algo is good enough, it will work. existing core users are usually mad at this change but the data speaks for itself on FB and IG home feeds (even before TikTok changed the game). Algo being good enough is important though
As a new user: It’s nice to feel you’re in control; you see what you want to see. If you don’t see anything you learn to explore, and work the network -- As someone who has got into the swing of things: Sounds pretty good (1 and 2) -- Wonder if there could be a threshold that triggers a change of experience
2. Neutral - if and only if there was a configuration option to make the “following” feed the default. 4. Mad - otherwise. I understand the importance of discovery, but I follow people for a reason and a chronological feed is a key affordance that lets me guage when I’ve “caught up” with things.
Confused as of now. While I know it'll either be popular opinion or something around product. I am a mad dog for alpha and early testing stuff but mid popular opinion? not sure.
1. Glad definitely feels like I'm seeing the same people cast all the time they're good people, but need something to bring in newbies who poast
1 that you treat new people as first class citizens.. annoyed if it’s not good, max and sad aren’t good labels imo
1 It's all experimental at this point. I think trying new stuff is good no matter what to try and get more feedback on revealed preference
Not sad or mad, but might use it less. Highlights isn’t always varied enough - especially for topics. Preference would be default following feed with some type of prompt/reminder for highlights.
Mad if it keeps switching me back to the "highlights" tab every time I reopen the app like Twitter does. Neutral if I get to set "following" as my default tab.
Probably 1. May as well experiment. Current experience is a bit lackluster. Many accounts go totally unnoticed and they’re amazing individuals.
Glad - I find the algorithmic feed of new posters on Twitter better than curating folks I follow.
I like the boost for new users but highlights, hmmm - could it be toggled? I’m a 2 - it’s only my second day here anyway
