I'd say in most cases it's the removal of a cap of usage. Many free versions have limitations on e.g. the number of free articles I can read per month. It's working because it assumes I like the product and in case I want to use more of it, I'm also willing to pay for it.

I remember hearing anything that separates you from the ground is worth paying extra for: mattress, shoes, tires, desk chair, etc and I've found that to be really accurate

definitely shoes and clothes although each have a peak where you get less quality and more pizzazz. I’ve noticed it when moving from $50 shoes to 150 and shirts $20 —> $40. Lasts longer and feels nicer. Also gotta save the feet!

Anything you use while working: desk (standing), chair, laptop, monitor, headphones, keyboard. 8-10 hours a day of usage adds up fast.

News. When I was a kid, people paid money for newspapers. Now we (mostly) pay for news with clicks. This has really messed up the incentives for the news agencies and a drastic reduction in quality has followed. We need to get back to paying real money for well researched, and fact checked, information.
