šŸŒ¶ļø ADD diagnoses annoy me.šŸŒ¶ļø 1. Implies a kid's problem with attending is due to something in them, not in their environment. (But why SHOULD kids thrive in modern hs?) 2. Implies a kid should be able to pay attention to things they are not naturally interested in. (But why's it NOT ok to find math boring?)

Best place in a classroom is the window seat. Always something going on outside, especially if the view was towards the sports field and airport

I’m more inclined to believe what the guest on this podcast posits, that ADD is an adaptation formed most often in childhood in response to negative stimuli.. https://overcast.fm/+066NarO4A

it doesn’t help that add symptoms share many symptoms with insufficient sleep, especially during children’s natural circadian rhythm, which our school systems don’t respect with excessively early wake times.

Most psycho Ed Evals won’t even diagnose ADD, it’s just ADHD now. From someone who was diagnosed at 9 and was on some form of stimulant until 34 (quit 2 years ago), start to wonder what actually interests you in life when you’ve been supplemented with dopamine for so long

the Huberman pod explains how those with ADHD have trouble coordinating default-mode and task-related neural networks, so re 1) it is an individual’s problem. 2) we SHOULD pay attention to things we’re not interested in; it teaches us discipline. imo behavioral tools >>> meds as a solution. note: I have ADHD :)

Itā€˜s not that simple… But I will agree on that it gets overdiagnosed, and on these cases your points apply.

Interesting. So to get a better understanding of your flavor of spicey annoyance…Do the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD annoy you? The fact that ADHD is considered a mental discorder according to modern psychiatry? The rate of diagnoses? Something else?

ADHD is a social fiction. the concept implies that our ancient brains are disordered if not wired for modern living. without training. right. even early humans discovered the primacy of a lifelong awareness practice, but we’re supposed to be born ready to navigate informational warfare. tragic and absurd.

This is an interesting article comparing outcomes for those diagnosed at a young age vs others with same symptoms but not diagnosed. Those diagnosed had worse outcomes. Perhaps lowers sense of own ability. https://www.madinamerica.com/2022/10/adhd-diagnosis-leads-worse-quality-life-increased-self-harm-kids/

Disagree on both points, based on a close reading of the diagnostic criteria for ADHD and the different categories of ADHD presentation. TL;DR – no reasonably competent clinician applying standard diagnostic criteria would confuse situational boredom with ADHD.

Getting through school with ADHD convinced me that I would homeschool my eventual children. I needed stimulants just to make it through high school, grades were good but it was an absolute prison

A video I recently saw described ADHD as a blindness or nearsightedness to time. Similar to how others might have a blindness or nearsightedness with their eyes. I thought this positioning was an interesting was to think about it

If a disorder is that common, is it really a disorder?
