I can only speak for my own experience, but I joined without knowing anyone here and have been able to do some cool stuff without permission 🫡 (it took like 6 months of being… uh… very active to get started though)

Imo, both. There is a core which is most influential, but you can get into that core based on "merit" (which I truly believe has wider and more generous definition in FC than in other ecosystems I've observed)
Farcaster is an open community where those that want to make an impact have an opportunity to do so next to some of the most mindful and ambitious people in technology. But you better be ready to live and die by your words and actions because everyone wants to know, how and why, or you’ll be left on the island.

I resonate with 2. Like others I joined without knowing anybody here.
#2 - I joined via a DM to a guy I had never heard of (@dwr), and joined a growing group of people I didn’t know. That said, I may be the exception not the norm.
Of the most active accounts on the protocol, I knew only a handful prior to Farcaster. Most of the "elite, inner circle" crypto people churned after onboarding.
To be a fair comparison of statements, I’d recommend putting a quality statement of the people on Farcaster in the first part of the second sentence (like you did in the first). Nevertheless #2 resonates more personally. I didn’t know anyone on FC before joining and feel like I can permissionlessly contribute.
I consider myself an outsider. From day one I’ve found a community of builders that are encouraging and engaging. What I haven’t found are influencers, schilling, trolling, or disinformation. The quality and value of community is a direct result of Farcaster’s design.
There are definitely inner circles but doesn't feel elite to me. So far everyone on my feed is receptive. I don't think everyone has an equal chance from the start, but if you participate effectively in highlighted casts, there's a better chance on being seen.
Well the latter isn’t actually true because of the way followers are distributed but people will tweet mean stuff if I keep saying that 🤪
I didn't know anyone when I joined, so closer to #2. But I wouldn't say everyone has an equal 'chance' for impact (it implies probability to me), but everyone has an equal 'opportunity'. Some people will have an easier time to succeed than others due to whatever skills they came in with
2 feels closer to my experience here but not sure about the ‘make an impact’ clause. Impact on what? eg never once thought success within a social network was needed to make a positive impact on the world. Amplify? Sure. Aside: Consider striking ‘inner circle of’ as you get that imaginary w ‘circle jerk’.

I think #2 is more true but it sometimes feels like #1 is. If you swap “elite” with “technical” it resonates more for me. I don’t see FC peeps as obnoxious thought leaders, but I am intimidated sometimes as a non-dev with no building experience
I don’t know that many ppl here but for someone who isn’t part of web3 this place will definitely look like a closed circle. Ppl vibe because we all talk about the same stuff because most of us work in the industry
I am not a crypto enthusiast or tech industry person in any capacity. I am a writer who got lucky enough to stumble into this space. I feel like a lot of my feed is generally just tech related and sometimes I feel like I don’t know how to interact with that. But when I post stuff I do feel like I’m just minding 1/
tbh i love farcaster for its intimacy and this is where my real unhinged thoughts that are too spicy for twitter live.
The "Coinbase" and "Ethereum" circles feel pretty distinct to me, with a bit of overlap in the middle of the Venn diagram. One thing I've liked about being here is finding a lot of new people who are not in my Ethereum circle on Twitter. (Also, we prefer to call them "seed rounds," not "circle jerks")
