What is an appropriate response to a stranger‘s „Hi, how are you?“ (e.g. at the super market).

I always respond formulaic with „good, how are you,“ but it feels off sometimes.

or you could just say "doing good" and keep walking lol

that works

also pretty common: 

"hey how's it going" 

"he how's it going"

neither party shares how it's actually going

I love this habit so I say “great, thank you so much for asking”

It’s almost rhetorical but still intended in a polite way. I smile or nod or respond with “good, thanks”.

I just realized that when I moved back to the US after spending two years in France, I have awkwardly waited for a response to that

Or if in the south like me you’ll get “Hey y’all”

This asking without expecting a response confused me so much when I moved here
