very sad how we’ve cyclically ended up in a world where airbnbs are worse than hotels and ubers worse than taxis

airbnbs still take the cake when it comes to group vacations and the same with Uber outside of major metropolitan areas. before uber one time i waited 2 hours for a taxi in a mid-major city while i sat there freezing my ass off on a curb after a party for solo or couples vacations hotels are absolutely the way to go.

This is so accurate — and I worked at Uber for 4.5 years.

I booked a month long tour of east Europe for this May. Venice to Berlin, generally on the east side of Iron curtain Hostels were cheaper in Venice and Berlin and Vienna, airbnbs were better in Hungary, Bratislava, and Prague I guess this is the point. Disruptors disrupts, and everyone ups their game

Your statement makes it sound like they’re better in all cases. This is not true. There are cases where each is better. To think that airbnbs would be better in 100% of cases sounds crazy to me. Uber over taxi… I don’t see why they shouldn’t disrupt at 100%. But Uber is not “worse” than taxis

I like what @lsn said below that disruptors disrupt and everyone ups their game. Although I'm not sure Uber has made taxis much better. The job of driving around the city taking people from place to place is not a great one and really needs to be replaced by a machine. We are going to get there

Kind of concerned this is going to happen with AI. Everyone rushes into the space (like people rushed into hosting), we fill the world with mediocre content (poor airbnbs), and we end up asking how we lost the thread so badly

My husband and I have lived nomadically out of Airbnbs for almost 3 years now. Beats a hotel any day for us with enough space for both to work remotely, kitchen, washer, and a bonus of allowing us to live in more local spots (vs more touristy areas for a lot of hotels)

I like to see it as helical progress. Pendulum always swinging back and forth but improves a little with each swing, a la a corkscrew. @balajis describes it well in his writings Uber made taxis better - I can now use credit cards and even apps in some cities. Don’t be sad 💕 Ride the wave 🌊

My guess is hotels and taxis adapted for the last 10 years. Without AirBNB and Uber, they wouldn't have evolved and the service they provide would still be bad. And while I agree for hotels, Taxis are still way less convenient than Uber, at least here in France.

It was never going to be any other way. The dialectic of disruption.

Within the last year, I opted to take a taxi from LAX to my home in Venice. On the average, it was 30% cheaper and arrived 10-15 minutes faster. This is new. Historically, Ubers and Lyft were more affordable. Times they are a changing...At least in LA. 🤷
