~50% of people don’t have an inner monologue. do you? when does it happen, or is it 24/7?
Yeah basically 100% of the time. When I read I have an inner monologue of reading the text, too, but I’m able to turn it on and off if I want to read faster.
I'd have them a lot once I put aside the many distractions but these inner monologues are quite interesting to me. How about you?
Oh Jesus. Tell him to stop please! He doesn’t stop, I don’t even know who invited him to this party. But it wasn’t me. Was it you?
I have zero inner monologue ama. It's mostly just abstractions, logic, pictures, concepts, and feelings.
24/7 I can’t imagine not having an inner monologue How would you figure out how to communicate with people?
imo, this can’t be true. everyone has an inner monologue, which is the ego focused on survival. it processes this through constant evaluation. its evolutionary function. how you direct /relate to it is a different matter, usually one of deliberate practice. michael singer, or loch kelly’s work for more about this
anyone know what research this claim is based on, been seeing it discussed a lot recently
i have inner monologues all the time, and sometimes actually say it out loud without knowing.
No inner monologue here. My experience consists of impressions, associations, scenes, emotions, compulsions, etc. Expressing all that in language would be lossy and slow!
24/7/365 and at multiple levels. I don't have an "inner eye" so everything is verbal descriptions and kinaesthetic, eg navigation is a verbal description and a sense of movement.
24/7. Every elongated silence is filled by the monologue. Sometimes helpful, sometimes insecure. It’s knowing when to listen that makes all the difference.
How do you define inner monologue? What’s the source of this data/hypothesis?
I used to have the inner monologue in my mind. Have you read 'The Untethered Soul'? It was a realization that the voice in my head and myself could be two different voices. I still hear those voices but am able to tune them out and choose when to listen to them.
Yeah, like all the time. Just like in a game of chess, it explores every potential possible scenario, analyzes it, comes up with a logical conclusion before moving on to the next. Oh and if my mind forgets a conclusion it does it all over again.
Literally my entire day is trying to zen it away so I can focus on getting something done. Great brain quirk for ideation, terrible for execution
100/100! it’s like a radio sometimes, but i’ve intentionally set up channels and specific body postures for different types of dialogue modes. the mind and body connection is so crucial.
FYI you can remove or enhance your inner monologue. It’s something you have control over through mental training.
I have an inner monologue 24/7, but I have a very weak to nonexistent mind’s eye
This + the responses are fascinating. You should read ‘The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind’ by Julian Jaynes. Absolutely revolutionary. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Origin_of_Consciousness_in_the_Breakdown_of_the_Bicameral_Mind
yes, it's 24/7. didn't realize it was that many that's didn't have it. fascinating to think we only just realized not too long ago.
Highly recommend The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer - the inner monologue has more power than you might think, and can be trained :)
Yes. I can’t even conceive of the idea that humans don’t have an inner monologue. Is everything just occurring at auto - like breathing? What do you hear when it’s quiet or you’re not engaged in something audio? I actually don’t believe it
I’m fascinated to know what personality traits either having or not having an inner monologue correlates with.
I don't have an inner monologue but I thought most people do. It's really interesting when you learn about it for the first time, especially for people without.
how about when you got multiple languages going?!? i found that i think in portuguese when it's related to numbers or emotions, english for more logical stuff
No* *Except for when at very low bandwidth and need to brute force my thinking back on track
