Arthur Hayes loves skiing because it requires 100% of your mental attention which imo means he really just likes flow state meditation 🫡 What other (ideally cheaper) activities accomplish the same thing for you?
Cycling for me. But that's not cheaper. Running would probably do the same thing.
This is why I love cooking. From recipe books, not recipe apps. My phone plugged in on the other side of the room. Just me and the food. I'm not a great cook, but I'm getting better, and I find peace, joy and breathing room in it.
For me it’s Downhill Riding, it’s block all the distractions and need 100% of my attention it’s a bits stressful too. And the other activity it’s Kite Surfing, that it’s kind of a factory Reset for my body.
Snowboarding, Speedwings, Soloing, Surfing, MTB, Motorcycles, Snowmobiles, Hiking to go fly or surfing are the cheapest for me
Funny, I never saw skiing as something where you need to concentrate 100%. Its so much more chill for me lol
For me, it is long distance trail running. It doesn't take 100% of your mental attention, but there is definitely a state of flow that can be reached. Not taking 100% of your head is a feature, not a bug: most of best ideas come during a run. 🏃♂️
Most exercise I enter a state of flow, especially cardio. That may be because I do most exercise alone, I prefer it that was maybe specifically bc otherwise it’s hard to enter flow. Climbing is an excellent flow inducer too, there’s only so much time you can hang up there so you need ultra focus
Kickboxing for me lol It's hard to describe the level of concentration I feel when sparring with someone. Drop your guard for a milisecond and you get punched in the face instantly lol
Working in crisis situations w/i mental health counseling gets me locked in to a flow state. I tinkered with saying, “just listening to others, without needing to respond, unless you are seeking clarification.” But the times that get me most locked in as a therapist are when I know someone is in crisis.
no one has mentioned it yet so i'll add reading to the list. A really good book can sent me into another world. Does this count as flow state?
Those who live to drive say it’s meditative. It doesn’t lead to flow for me though!
Playing any type of sport, driving, gaming. Sometimes listening to a podcast episode that touches upon things that you’ve been thinking about even.
CrossFit… thank goodness there is no downvoting on Farcaster 🙂🙂🙂. Real talk going hard for 10-20m while keeping 3-5 movements and reps in head and getting technique right or risk back injury is flow state like
for me what works are: snowboarding skateboarding bouldering swimming gym/cross fit
It’s why I started Brazilian jiu jitzu, but the time requirement has made me pause it. Cycling, mixing/DJing (I’m not that good, but it’s fun and easy to get into), shooting hoops are my go-tos now. My friends also have luck with colouring/doodling, jigsaw puzzles, playing instruments and gardening.
accelerated anaerobic HIIT, cooking 5 meals at the same time, jogging and trying to take stable 35mm pictures.
Dancing salsa - There's even a Spanish word for this state: “entretenerse”. Often used to mean “to entertain one’s self” it literally means “to lose yourself in (something)”
Dance, hands down, nothing else comes close (plus it's cheap and you can do it anywhere!).
Puzzles/Lego & art - crosswords, sudoku, some digital apps, jigsaw. Freestyle Lego building (which is kind of a puzzle) and art projects. I have trouble shutting my brain down at night. These are all usually good ways to force my brain into 100% concentration. Bonus I can do most with my kids and we focus together.
I don‘t know what Arthur Hayes and skis triggered in people but this thread has been sticking for too long at the top 😅
even walking and paying attention to stuff can achieve same effect of being in the moment
most martial arts I guess (taijiquan for me). calligraphy (both european and asian). first-person deathmatch fps with simple mechanics and capable opponents (quake3/half-life etc, achievements/teams/short rounds and other artificially structured stuff kills it)
Cycling all day and every day. Upfront cost is more than skiing, but once you have your equipment, it you and the open road.
