Arthur Hayes loves skiing because it requires 100% of your mental attention which imo means he really just likes flow state meditation 🫡 What other (ideally cheaper) activities accomplish the same thing for you?

This is why I love cooking. From recipe books, not recipe apps. My phone plugged in on the other side of the room. Just me and the food. I'm not a great cook, but I'm getting better, and I find peace, joy and breathing room in it.

For me it’s Downhill Riding, it’s block all the distractions and need 100% of my attention it’s a bits stressful too. And the other activity it’s Kite Surfing, that it’s kind of a factory Reset for my body.

For me, it is long distance trail running. It doesn't take 100% of your mental attention, but there is definitely a state of flow that can be reached. Not taking 100% of your head is a feature, not a bug: most of best ideas come during a run. 🏃‍♂️

Most exercise I enter a state of flow, especially cardio. That may be because I do most exercise alone, I prefer it that was maybe specifically bc otherwise it’s hard to enter flow. Climbing is an excellent flow inducer too, there’s only so much time you can hang up there so you need ultra focus

Working in crisis situations w/i mental health counseling gets me locked in to a flow state. I tinkered with saying, “just listening to others, without needing to respond, unless you are seeking clarification.” But the times that get me most locked in as a therapist are when I know someone is in crisis.

It’s why I started Brazilian jiu jitzu, but the time requirement has made me pause it. Cycling, mixing/DJing (I’m not that good, but it’s fun and easy to get into), shooting hoops are my go-tos now. My friends also have luck with colouring/doodling, jigsaw puzzles, playing instruments and gardening.
