Ok I know only the hardcore casters are here to respond to this: Have we transitioned as a society to vertical first videography? NOTE: I am not asking for your opinion on which is artistically better - I am wondering if TikTok has won the cell phone visual orientation war 🫡
Varies by type of content, IMO. It works for TikTok, but I mostly see people consuming YouTube horizontally.
For short clips, yes. For movie/TV show consumption, no: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quibi
Seems like 1. Vertical won the war of how we hold our devices, and 2. Humans like to show/see their bodies If a human is the focal point, vertical wins. Maybe VR/AR is the next paradigm shift?
related to ux I think. vid require simple one thumb interaction. So hold with one hand(vertically) is more natural. very common to hold horizobtally playing games tho
I’ve seen many TikTok videos that have horizontal content at the top, and they fill the bottom half with gameplay videos from Minecraft and Subway Surfers. Ultimate dopamine hit
Anecdotally, ‘yes.’ Once we move beyond smart phones there will be a one-touch option to toggle between vertical and horizontal settings. Default setting will be up to the user, but is likely to be horizontal.
i think what’s happening is that over time the phone is replacing the PC as our main computing device
yes and the video format commercial groups are working on new codecs etc for it since a year or two to optimize layout like css flex box for videos
It has its place now, but won’t replace everything. It’s convenient for watching some kind of content while on mobile. But I’ll always be a die hard 2.35 aspect ratio fan. Especially for cinema
IMO short video - vertical, long video - horizontal. Now, I'm not sure how to judge which is more popular: # of views - probably vertical amount of time watched - maybe horizontal still
hmm human binocular vision is about 200 degrees wide and only 135 degrees high, meaning we are biologically designed to see better horizontally than vertically. vertical imo is due to a) mobile cam placement and b) small screen size. if we anticipate videography’s next medium is AR/VR, horizontal will remain suprem
depends what the content is for. i think people shoot with content in mind. if it will be somewhere else before insta/tiktok - its shot horizontal. Think of podcasts. Shot horizontal still cause they go to youtube, edited vertical.
If VR takes off it’ll be another paradigm altogether. The main transition we’ve made technically and culturally is to adapt to new formats.
I feel it’s dependent on the screen size and the intention. Long-form and highly produced is meant for a TV/theater. Short form and lower budget works great on a phone. Want a test? Try watching YouTube Shorts on a TV: horrendous experience. Alternatively, movie trailers often have a “turn your phone sideways” pr
I think yes because it's harder to hold a phone horizontally and harder to interact when you need to Feels like it's easier for the user
Once everyone has AR glasses we will return to the one, true aspect ratio (4:3)
No. Footage is all captured either in landscape or square. I’d say we’re transitioning to reformatting content to vertical than being vertical-native videography. VR/AR content right now is captured in square format to give editor enough space for image stabilization in all directions due to fast head movement.
