I’ve lived in LA for the last 7 years. My lease is up soon and I’m considering trying somewhere new. I value natural beauty, access to international flights, and a strong sense of local identity. Shill me on where you think I should move (and why!) — anywhere is fair game.
Come to Reno. Has everything but international flights. Easy access to San Francisco and Vegas.
First cast I am "watching". Don't even know what that does but I guess I'll find out. Curious to see the responses here. We discussed this but I'll add Charleston
Tokyo is a great place to live, the quality of life here is great. Super safe, clean, great food too. Is different from LA but is worth trying even for 3 months :)
NYC (yes, we have natural beauty here), CDMX, Lisbon, Madrid (or Sevilla but less flights I think)
SF all the way. Mt. Tam or Stinson Beach in 30 mins, SFO right there, lots of culture in the city.
Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon, Puglia, Taipei Or just hit them all up nomadic style
lol SLC has all of those but the local sense of identity is polarized, conflicted, and often toxic great place tho
Singapore 🇸🇬 ✅ Natural beauty (tropical / lush, massive old trees) ✅ International flights (best airport, best airline, convenient springboard to Asia) ✅ Strong local identity (Peranakan heritage, etc.) ✅ English spoken ✅ High QoL ❌ Expensive; hot and humid (which I enjoy, but not for everyone)
Berlin or Portugal, both strong crypto scene too. Amsterdam if it captures your senses
/chicago We got 30+ miles of gorgeous lakefront to walk, run, bike Proud local identity (neighborhoods) International flight galore (O'Hare) A great public transit system Amazing food! @dawufi @sanchitram.eth @nickb @spengrah.eth @wayseeker help me out 😉
Come to Bangalore, India. It’ll be a massive culture shock, the food is unmatched, and most of India is chaotic but super beautiful. It’s also got a fantastic tech/web3 community and builders bustling with energy.
I have similar values and just moved to LA myself 🤣 I'm currently in Kyoto (as a tourist) which has incredible natural beauty. Probably not your long-term home but defo worth checking out! Have you considered Vancouver? Same timezone so could be a quite practical.
marseille — arguably except for july and august when holidaymakers infest the city
I think you should try digital nomading for a bit. Push your boundaries and see what you truly need while traveling and what you don’t. Just pick up and go when and wherever you feel like it. I did it all of last year and really enjoyed it!
Also consider Boulder, CO. And Sydney and Auckland are amazing gateways to AU and NZ. AU/NZ have some good programs for entrepreneurs
Upstate New York... I love the Catskills...it's unbelievably still & beautiful. Great hiking, lakes, and surrounded by nature. A lot of towns have a population of ~6,000 and even as a visitor I felt the sense of community there
Disagree with everyone who said France/Paris unless you want to be deep into AI scene. From personal experience, level of comfort:price is very low, language barrier is a problem, upcoming Olympic Games. But heard good things about Cape Town.
Claim South Dakotan residency if you plan on nomading for no state income tax! Could rotate between states according to the weather, keep tax residency in SD, I’d do NYC - Austin - Miami
why go far, just go a little south to San Diego County, its crazy how much the vibe seems to shift once you're south of Pendleton
> strong sense of local identity how do you define this? I think tech SF / Bay Area is the most ambitious group of talented people in the world by 10x. That said, minimal local mentality. cf. SF politics (although maybe changing with Garry Tan push)
Is US based important? If yes what would a non US city need to offer to make the trade offs worth it? What do you value about natural beauty - is it in relation to your lifestyle or your soul? what value do you place on access to an urban scene?
