asking for a friend (me), does the phrase “network state” excite anyone beyond technocrats and crypto bros?

👋 I think it is coolest thing happening in crypto I don't understand why so many people are dunking on it ? Especially in current government environment & general stagnation. I don't understand how are governance & coordination experiments bad ? #networksStateCitizen

it doesn't really excite me because when I try to visualize what it actually physically looks like it I have a hard imagining anything other than walled compounds or private-micro cities at odds with local populations, hostile even. fundamentally set apart. too close to a cult for my tastes.

Depends on how you define network state. If it means generally improving human coordination using decentralized technologies which in turn reforms existing institutions, I'm all for that. If it means building a brand new form of government using blockchain, that one makes me a bit uncomfy.

It doesn’t excite me… Feels like everything will be a network in the long run. So if this is some vision of the future, it isn’t considering the trend of networks becoming the default.

I have a close friend who is as far away from crypto bro type as you could imagine. He considers it a very compelling idea. Less corruption, and less reasons for violence (why would you attack a group of people who would disperse immediately maintaining the social fabric still), more freedom.

As someone coming back to crypto (avoided the hype) it means nothing. It needs to take a lesson from farcaster - the benefits can't be crypto/ideological

I think most non-tech people don't get the phrase. I've been writing a serialized cyberpunk novel and called this distributed and powerful country Diaspora :)

it's a good technical descriptor, like how the USA is a "Federal Republic". It will not be the thing that people identify with. The actual instantiations will be amazing symbols with an accompanying ideology—and that will probably be people's first touch point.

the way I'd frame it: what town thrives without a community center? not sure if balaji's framework is 100% sound, but there definitely are common structures, on a global basis, that should get the resources to maintain public goods.

The network state is the "we need to settle mars" of crypto. It's an interesting thought experiment and a non-solution for the systemic and social issues we face.

In reply to @ted
6/15/2023

Nah. Term itself comes off as not genuinely community oriented. “Network” to me implies a value based exchange instead of something more in line of being selfless/independent of ulterior motives.

Also. I see it as the financialization of the final frontier of feminine power, social power. It can be seen both ways. On the positive front women finally gets financially recognized for their work and efforts in this area. On the negative, clearly takes away from the authenticity of connections.

We've described the network state the same way we described Bitcoin and Ethereum. We emphasize technology over relatable use cases. Is it any wonder folks consider this a snoozer? There are great examples in books like "The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer" and "Daemon"
