What would you say are problems of web2 identity? Problems of web3 identity? (hoping crowd-surfing is invited here)

web2 - geo-bound, government-issued/controlled, easy to game (someone gets hold of your SSN they can reek havoc) web3 - fragmented across diff chains, wallets, and bifurcated from web2 data (today no great way to link across). web3 identity to date has been address centric which typically doesnt tell us a whole lot

Web2 - account creation for every app resulting in data silos, lack of portability and creating honeypots for data breaches Web3 - managing a private key, frictionless auth for mobile.

Web2 is cumbersome and can be turned off Web3 you cannot reset keys once compromised and you cannot recover it if you lose access.

Web2: The obvious siloed nature, centralized control / creation Web3: Key issues we are working to solve... mnemonics UX, interoperability among networks, lack of zero knowledge integrations Give this space a few more years and we'll be there!

Web2: constantly rebuilding identity across silos Web3: constantly rebuilding identity across silos and storing data on servers because we don’t yet know how to use web3 patterns

web2 - non-fungibility. reputation and identity do not follow the individual. web3 - lack of trust, in part due to widespread anonymity + speculative crypto culture.

I’m currently contributing to a few different web3 ID projects + building my own can confidently say that one of the biggest problems with web2 and web3 specs are interoperability standards are good but more is needed to make existing specs work together that’s what I’m aiming to fix, plus make it fun too

What does web3 identity even mean? What are the characteristics and properties that constitute for a web3 identity?

The DID/Web3 projects we’ve seen this year always focus on intaking Web2 social apps (Twitter/LinkedIn, etc) which is weak imo. Then they try to capture onchain activity (which is interesting), but not enough. Then the old model of staking to verify (🤮) I def think zk to input data for verification is the right

Identity should be based on your interests Web3 ownership allows you to “own your interests” and display them as part of your identity “I as owner of Cool Cats resonate with them for reason (…)” and can show the world that with my PFP Digital identity will go hand in hand with digital asset ownership

Web2 Identity - platform dependent (2 problems: 1, opt out of privacy to use the platform; 2, not interoperable or portable Web3 Identity - no defined standards, is a wallet an identity? An ENS? Soul Bound? VC?

Web2 identity imo is very scattered. You have an identification for purpose. Web3 has infra without consolidation. A wallet address is enough to build your entire reputation. Think social security vs. drivers license vs. passport. Can be one wallet address but isn’t.

web 2: anonymity = difficult to separate the need for privacy vs deceit. Identity & content difficult to link (e.g. randoms pretending to be Elon / Vitalik on twitter) web 3: anonymity accepted (encouraged even?), assuming there can be KYC if needed. Able to link identity to content hopefully more effectively.
