When hiring people, how much do you value their expertise vs the culture fit?
Depends a lot on the role, but want to make sure they are a fit for the most unconventional parts of the culture, or at the very least, know what they are getting into.
Hard to find an example of any hire that wasn’t a cultural fit working out
Hiring someone who can’t do the job is silly. Hiring someone who is not a culture fit will hurt the individual & the team. Problem is the most people define culture fit as someone looking like me and with the same background.
the real values of a company are often reflected by team members who have been promoted or forced to leave.
depends somewhat on the role but in general I value ability to learn new skills even more than current expertise. culture fit is important but heed @cerberus ‘s warning
Culture over expertise :) I wrote a guide on hiring for startup founders here! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ilD_uVBugcsbfmSfnS38LWSOgssksRu2BkOMs6ZkGC0/edit
