Shill me an open source / free typeface that's better than Inter?

I still like iosevka. They now have both slab and non-slab quasi-proportional variants https://typeof.net/Iosevka/

better than inter at being a workhorse body sans serif? i can't think of any. I think where people go wrong is when they use it too much for titles and display. there are better options

Noto is a strong option especially if you’re looking to use multiple languages. https://fonts.google.com/noto Style wise, I’m not sure there are many/any better than Internet right now… Helvetica?

This is a loaded question, but assuming use case = modern web app that uses lots of text, Inter is the new "Helvetica" for a reason. That said, there are plenty of free typefaces out there that are better suited for other use cases, esp for print and/or titling. FC could level up by using a titling face, esp for logo

Would add to this that there are good reasons (not just bc they have cash) as to why every legit company ends up commissioning their own typeface, but until then, Inter works well here

Glad to see the desire to look beyond inter :) wish devs and builders would value typography and support type foundries more in general.

This thread reaffirmed my suspicion that there aren't many designers on FC

Replacing Inter is difficult, but I think DM Sans is the closest in terms of readability and clarity, with a bit of softness and personality. Also, it has recently been updated and supports variable fonts https://fonts.google.com/specimen/DM+Sans
