What are the most mainstream examples of NFT 'utility'? Token-gated discords anecdotally seem to be the #1. What else?
Digital collectibles. Think Reddit Avatars and Starbucks Odyssey. There is utility in participation and progression through the collection journey.
the ultimate utility is to sell them lower than the price you paid to acquire them for
Nothing comes close to NBA top shots/dapperlabs for mainstream imo Event ticketing maybe second
I think we're just at the beginning of NFT as access to online space I'd pay extra for that online space to not be Discord
I would say ticketing (that is the biggest $$ for Unlock right now). In terms of volume, we have seen a lot for games/gimmicks like https://advent.unlock-protocol.com/ (220k NFT minted!)
visual ID that can, with ERC-6551 (and possibly 4337), potentially do everything else onchain once those are deployed retroactively. token-gating via ERC-20 is baseline, gating via specific object w/ valuable metadata is another thing entirely.
I'm pretty hyped about NFTs as stream namespaces. Basically subreddits for Farcaster and similar.
Token-gated allowlists for minting. Burn mechanics for games and minting. POAP-like use cases for event-linked collectibles. Event tickets On-chain art
Tokens = Lottery tickets, w built-in community. NFTs = Lottery tickets, w built-in community *and* identity. (I'm not being tongue-in-cheek, I think these are genuine and revolutionary products w real PMF.)
Handful of NFTs with utility beyond collectible... • ENS - 670k • Rainbow Zorb - 120k • Dawnpass - 11k • Gallery Membership - 11k • Premint - 10k • Coinage - 6k • @launch pass - 5k • Stepn - 4k • Floor - 3,3k
I really liked the Farcaster purple check unlocked by NFT feature tbh quick way of seeing at a glance "this person is not just larping and actually knows the basics of crypto"
Ticket master and that airline in Australia with flight tickets as NFTs, so u can resell ur ticket on an open marketplace
There are tons of examples of NFTs with utility, mainly proofs of something, like POAPs or academy certificates, I am building proof of buildership (basically, the nft is a proof of a being a builder and builders get paid trough a cashflow connected to the nft from project profits) Now, NFTs can hold other assets, too
Just found something earlier today about this. Escrow RWA, issue NFT as the redeem ticket, use that NFT as collateral for a loan. This means you now have global liquidity for assets. https://warpcast.com/sheldon/0x18fcec
Were making a pluggin to support decentralized user management on click to code website apps
soulbound nft to mimic apple airtags, easy way to track member and keep sending them airdrops and all sort of related use-cases.
Simple PFP recognition This will win in the long term Designer PFPs will be a thing, historic brands might come back (if they can represent something), individual influencers will make and break start up artist careers & collections
One of my favorite things working at thirdweb is seeing how people are building real products using our tools. Some of the usecases I've seen: Commerce: - loyalty programs - digital coupons - digital receipts Gaming: - in game items - skins - unlockable content Creators: - subscription passes - community roles
Not mainstream yet, but I think Hats Protocol will make NFT 'utility' mainstream. People will have dozens or hundreds of NFTs associated with their account (often explicitly unbeknownst to them)
Dynamic Land NFTs tracking things like trees planted and carbon offset. GainForest and Kollektivo are the two best examples but CFCE is working on a similar concept.
badges that you can keep as a proof of reputation - levels, scores, achievements. that others can reward you for too..
I'm not a fan of this portmanteau, but the intersection of IRL/URL is one of the most interesting design spaces for NFTs https://mirror.xyz/1kx.eth/k5lbpB155Tz_pH7B-7vbtDTTRKrco3u_y5QYUX1YhZs
Sorare collectibles with soccer related utilities and a multibillion $ market comes to mind
I’ve been looking into using nfts for townhalls and other access points to your elected officials. Only constituents can join.
In my experience I have nft for access to place in gallery, as pass for airdrops and mints from artists. Also have one for access to educational project.
