Granular role based access controls to customer data for a global saas company that had GDPR, FedRAMP and other data privacy compliance requirements
For a while I was running a raspberry pi with homeassistant to automate my smarthome: turn on/off lights when I’m home, etc. Now just rely on Google Home for this. Also run a camping bot to snag hard-to-reserve campsites
Back in the day I automated some scripts to pull Turo/RelayRides ride data in order to track profitability
I made an iOS shortcut that takes a voice input and appends it as a line of text to my markdown-based journal/pkm system (Logseq)
I built a pulley system to smack me, get me out of bed, and throw my laptop at me when my blood/alc is over .08 at 8am
Everything from garage doors to lights to home alarm to plant lights to sprinkler systems . All of them using HA .
Logging a UK neobank’s daily user number to a personal database to track growth.
Haven’t managed to attain this myself - but having “a usual” in any bar/cafe/restaurant is a cool automation imo
Batch exporting Adobe Illustrator designs to a format ready for copyright compliance uploads. Really boring. Brought a seasonal 14 hours’ work down to 20 minutes. Bonus feature: became favourite team member.
My tweets. Basically I built a bot connected to a Google spreadsheet. The bot tweeted every n hours and cycled through the spreadsheet. Each sheet had one topic: my software, quotes, etc. The bot also supported gifs and images.
Here are a few: - turn on bathroom fan if humidity too high - monitor electric rates and turn off power hogs during peak rates - send text alert if wine cellar temp gets too high - vacation toggle runs light program, turns down thermostat, and disables garage door power
Remove external branding from a default shipping thermal label, and add my company branding and socials, then combine labels with receipt for printing. Was super annoying before.
So much marketing lives on automation. One of the biggest reminders for how much we automate was on March 12, 2020 when I had our team at a SaaS company shut them all down. Didn’t want tone deaf comms during the pandemic shutdown. Almost every step in a customer journey has automation behind the scenes.
not particularly unique but QoL automations for someone with severe insomnia: - smart lights auto-adjust throughout the day to benefit my circadian rhythm rather than interrupt it - thermostat automations for living room + bedroom in evening/night - automated blinds blackout at night + let light flood in at sunrise
- One remote button in each kid's room to close the shades, turn off the light, dim the hallway, and turn on white noise - Generating random email addresses for services with a couple clicks - Keyboard shortcuts/mouse gestures for complex window management on Mac
I built a CLI to read a YAML file to assign my paychecks to budget categories in YNAB. No more "crap, did I forget to fund the water bill budget again?" https://github.com/jrh3k5/autonabber
I made a great shortcut to play the most recently added unlistened to album in Apple Music
