Got mixed feelings about the Creator Economy hype. Saying "Everyone is a creator!" is like saying, "Everyone is a basketball player." It's, of course true, but just like only a few players end up in the NBA, only a few creators end up making significant money online.
And although I think creating is great and people learn a lot even if they end up making $0, it's good to be honest about the odds of winning.
Good point. But don’t throw away the babe with the bath water. Decouple creation from economics. Promote creativity without promising $$
"Everyone is a creator", but not everyone monetizes, and only a few do so at a large scale, leaving only a few to define the creator economy.
agree with @cerberus and @adrienne. Creativity is a positive sum game.
3 quick thoughts: - People tend to rise (or fall) to the expectations you set for them - Flow (not Stock) of Creators is what we should pay attention to (esp part time folk) imo - There is already enough value in the Content Economy to pay every half decent Creator a living wage, it’s just not distributed that way
Perhaps it should just be seen as "now everyone can create", multimedia communication has been democratized.
Everyone could be a creator, but not every creator could find 1000 true fans.
i'm convinced the 'everyone is a creator' myth was spun up in a smokey back room by apple and adobe in the early aughts to move units.
"Everyone is a creator" is a false statement. Everyone could be a creator, but most choose the comfort of being a consumer. Becoming a creator doesn't imply ability to monetize, at all or significantly, your creations. Similarly, choosing to play basketball doesn't guarantee you'll become LeBron James. Perspective.
Created to Become. Maybe we are all our own creators of our digital selves. Yet we’re currently segmented and separated across applications. Shift the perspective towards self-sovereignty and extract value online.
Also loads of people don't want the stress of being an independent creator / pushing to reach the nba
I’m more bullish on what I call the Cooperation economy. Multiple actors within a community create value that’s distributed rather than one actor creating all the value
i hope the creators understand this, and create for the sake and love of creating
But the bar to try and actually put in the work is quite easy here, the friction is less and hence the factor of luck is quite impactful
