Eh, all the vehemently religious would deny as much as possible, just like they did during the Trunp years, like they always do.. Though some would rationalize it as a “sign” from God of some sort, I assume. Everyone else who didn’t believe in the trad religions would be taken aback, tho smugly validated
Not well, the fact that they can reach us but not the other way around indicates a huge technological superiority and would probably incite a panic.

It'd likely be similar to the COVID response, right? An initial slow burn. Some people believe & panic quickly. Others aren't concerned and live their lives normally. International consensus is reached about a global response. Some people will support this. Others will revolt. New economies will boom. Others collapse.

Tbh I think The Three Body Problem was pretty damn realistic: some new religions, also a cult asking the aliens to destroy us, and the rest of us just running around like headless chickens with no clue what to do

depends where the confirmation comes from, and proximity — if the aliens are ‘out there’ versus imminent threat. if from a human source, probably like covid (scope for doubt) but if we’re hearing this directly from the aliens rather than earth world leaders then…cargo cults? mortal panic.

Half of society wouldn’t believe they are real; spread misinformation to not look up on foxnews; then would shift their vitriol from migrants and illegal aliens to actual aliens; war ensues; aliens drop a simple virus easily thwarted by wearing a mask to strategically annihilate that half of the human race; win/win.
