I imagine if people felt like they were winning more in their daily life they’d want to think more about discovery and experience

This is actually wild to me. Spiritual poverty, interesting conclusion. Can’t say I disagree but what else?

Once dated a girl who grew up in Tucson AZ. Had never left the state. Never really traveled. Normal person. Middle class upbringing. She didn’t care at all about travel. Blew my mind. Seeing this it looks like she might be in the majority.

Would you go to Mars? (my brother and I debate this frequently. I say ‘yes’ and he says ‘no’)

We need a new America to gather people who have that adventurous spirit. Mars? Can you imagine the culture that would derive from the people crazy enough to make the trip to Mars? I hope I’m alive to see it.

My answer to this would depend on perceived safety. I would definitely go if my safety were guaranteed, but I don’t care enough to risk my life if I think it’s dangerous. I wonder if others were also thinking through that lens?

The ~1% failure rate of manned rocket launches is something that is very unnerving The risk factor increases when you takeoff from the moon again and reenter into earth’s atmosphere Both money and safety is something of concern imo, it will take a while until the reliability improves

Spiritual poverty is a great expression. I have and will go anywhere on Earth but zero desire to explore the outer realms. Think you either a ‘space’ person or you’re not. Other tech I’m onboard for tho.

Here are a few good reasons… 1. 40% of Americans are afraid of flying 2. 2.5-5% are clinically afraid so their doctor wouldn’t even let them 3. 39M in the world have debilitating acrophobia. The thought of heights and flying to the moon to see earth… would probably send them into a violent panic attack.

money aside, I imagine for many people the thought of being in space is existentially terrifying.

Okay well that movie Gravity put the fear in me for space travel... However I'd be SUPER interested in exploring the DEEP ocean ⛴️and mountain tops 🏔️ Also a resident of IL, my wallet thanks me MONTHLY for nuclear energy! keepin it LIT 🔥

I do agree that we need more techno-optimism. You may enjoy reading my genesis manifesto :) a conceptual collection that provokes thought, questioning and a pause at the intersection of art & tech.
