50 isn’t the new 30. Mediocrity seems more palatable with cute slogans. It’s not ok to grow old without a legacy worth mentioning.
For most of recorded human history the average lifespan was <40 years old. So...
what gave you impression that phrase is about mediocrity? imo the point of "30 is the new 20" or "50 is the new 30" is that life doesn't peak when you are younger and only gets better as you get older — and tbh i find that every year does get better, and it is 99% in my own control to make sure of that.
“it’s not ok” to not have a legacy? 😂 go take some more selfies in the gym bro
David Rubenstein, one of the founders of The Carlyle Group, once said that the secret to life was the win the second half of it not the first.
your legacy is dust your money is meaningless your memory is your ego your references are subjective people that remember you die buddha doesn’t stop being enlightened there is no final place to get to life means you keep going focus on how you do not what you have
Have you read about The 100-Year Life concept? Essentially when our life expectancy was 70, our mid-life crisis was around 35. With current life expectancy for the upper middle class that number is closer to 50. This can influence certain timelines e.g. when to have kids, how much risk you can take at 35, etc
No, 60 is the new 30. And it’s absolutely fine to grow old without a legacy worth mentioning, I’d go as far as to say that is the optimal form of a human.
It's a rather passive aggressive slogan that normalises the state of the economy where you have to save enough of your earnings until you reach 50 to live an actual life, while in the past being 30 would have been achievable at 20.
men peeing on trees and then making it r/im14andthisisdeep material move along, everyone
I’m with you on this. Make something that must exist. It should be so urgent that every other moment feels like the montage in between
To each their own. We strive, others don't. That makes us different but not necessarily better. Some of the reasons why Denmark is considered amongst the happiest places is because they don't strive as much. They have their basic needs, enjoy equality and life. There is risk and suffering in striving.
I love the urgency to have a bias for impact, but a lesson I've learned is that everyone has their own 'timezones' in which they do things.
unaware if this has been mentioned here before but I think the slogan is based on changing societal and biological conditions where being 50 doesn’t mean getting closer to retirement or death. people are finding purpose beyond the age of 30 and living longer. that’s beautiful.
“You show me a lazy prick who's lying in bed all day, watching TV, only occasionally getting up to piss, and I'll show you a guy who's not causing any trouble.” - George Carlin
I think you're both right and wrong. 50 is treated as the new 30 but it shouldn't be because that's a bad thing actually. But also being unambitious isn't necessarily a bad thing. As a 31yo with 4 kids I'm stoked to be in my prime during their childhood and hopeful to see their children's children.
1. Kazi, after reading through most of the casts in this post, I wanted to tell you that the way that you are communicating your opinions comes off badly which is what instigates the fighting. Rather than calling people losers, plz remember that other people have different definitions of success.
