What are other people's impressions of the difference between the cultural vibe in farcaster vs bluesky vs mastodon vs lens? (I have my own answers but am very curious what other people's answers are)
Obviously take with grain of salt Nostr: Bitcoin maxis Farcaster: Eth maxis but not degen Lens: crypto maxis, yes degen Bluesky: TPOT, generally left leaning Mastodon: other Twitter refugees Threads: people who missed the boat on becoming instafamous - a influencer power debt jubilee
Cozy vs rowdy vs bullet board energy vs airdrop farm and Creator energy IMO
I've been on Masto for many years now. It's very fragmented and feels isolating due to its federated nature. I haven't used the other two so I can't comment on them. I like FC a lot especially because of all the development that has been going on. The people here are helpful and friendly.
Farcaster: more thoughtful than your avg crypto community yet somewhat insulated from greater reality Bluesky: decent but lack of strong cohesive communities Mastodon: strong communities that are very allergic to new ideas and change Lens: zero real community
Fairly obvious: the average Farcaster user is more technically educated than Lens users, typically hacker-type (in the domain-agnostic sense of “hacker”, i.e. includes designers with a lot of energy and build-in-public mindset) and conversational (that’s rewarded here) BlueSky is more like a blog-focused Twitter
farcaster - upstream of cryptotwitter. quickest to translate ideation to deployment bluesky - "web4" twitter on new wave federation. some public figures that "are hip" mastodon - the underdog flagship(s) of "OG" federation lens - optimistic dispatcher for web3 creators, tokenized & DeFi adjacent
Twitter is a shit show, let me count the ways. Bluesky is all over the place and it’s going to take more time to make my feed what I want it to be. It doesn’t motivate me WC feels warm and conversational and sufficiently nerdy. Also ephemeral. A special time before it eventually pops off. It will pop off.
been experiencing in aggregate and noticed that bluesky has the best memes and fc the best takes. fc satisfies my crypto twitter needs
Crypto capabilities better on Lens 🌿; crypto community better on Farcaster ⛩️
lens: bots (unfortunately) fc: smart crypto people or crypto people with a lot of clout or crypto people with very little clout trying to get some mastodon/bluesky: not my vibe twitter: neutral good
does anyone else agree with this? farcaster has more of a builder community lens has more of a creator or content community this is how I've described the difference to people who've asked about it on twitter they're also the only two I use & care about (outside of bird app)
farcaster: tech ppl literary cafe – interesting discussions, can feel a bit serious bluesky: tech ppl open mic comedy club – interesting discussions but can be drowned out by bad stand up acts lens: convention center but no one knows what the convention is about mastodon: haven't used in years 🤷🏻♀️
Atmosphere here is much better than Mastodon imo. Mastodon feels more defensive and there's a tendency of tone policing. Also there's more brainy web3 stuff going on. Can't vouch for Bluesky or Lens.
A good way to think about them new socials BlueSky: MSNBC Threads: Bravo Twitter: Fox Mastodon: public access Lens: channel 838 on Dish! Farcaster: actual network layer provider!
ICP projects are pariahs in crypto: Tagger.top - runs 100% on chain with a dao that votes on upgrades, all open sourced, anyone can contribute. Distrikt.app - also runs 100% on chain that is launching their dao soon. Dscvr.one - mostly on chain, we use analytics tools and feed algos off chain. All WASM based apps.

mastodon more software libertarian vibe - most of them dislike crypto and view it as promising tech spoiled by overnight wealthy brats lens not there mich tbh, ux is still terrible bluesky never bother trying what is bkue
Would love to see a comparison of answers to your Q from each graph, with a similar question to this. https://warpcast.com/les/0xf8ee3e
Farcaster: open, unformed crowd Bluesky: rigid young communities Mastodon: siloed old communities Lens: ghost town of airdrop farmers Substack Notes: Bluecheck Nation Threads: idk; not inspired to find out Nostr: masochist libertarians Twitter: Rome in 477 AD
fc is more chill lens is 70% bots havent used the other two, twitter feels like the frontline
I'd say culturally mastodon and farcaster are similar as in the users care about some level of decentralization/independence and they don't care much about influence and reach. BlueSky seems to be mostly verified Twitter refugees. Lens has attracted "the bad part" of crypto such as token farmers.
Farcaster: crypto developers Bluesky: Jack and his fans Mastodon: subculture enthusiasts Lens: airdrop hunters
Bluesky: unhinged bisexual shitposters Farcaster: oops all computer science majors Mastodon: internet HOA Twitter: The fall of Rome Lens: Spam
I think the initial wave of users sets the tone. It’s a sort of network effect. It can change over time (early Twitter was very different from Twitter a few years later) but once a tone is set that is the vibe that new users will see.
Great question, interesting to revisit regularly. In my experience: FC: early twitter meets startup culture, kind, focus on web3 Bluesky: artists escaping Twitter. A bit fun, a bit shill, a bit art. Mastodon: never really got it. Tried but never got traction Lens: great features, little interaction for me.
Ofc everyone's feed will be different but I'm seeing so much anti-Twitter sentiment on Threads. In comparison, Farcaster never felt anti-Twitter but instead a small (for now) corner of builders and tinkerers in tech.
• farcaster: US-centric hackernews and web3 mix. good atmosphere and energy, interesting people to follow but sometimes it feels like i'm reading linkedin motivational pieces ("success is a choice") • bluesky: feels like where the average twitter refugee goes, just shooting shit and having a laugh. hype centric
After several months using Lens, Farcaster and Bluesky day by day (I didn't like Mastodon) I have to say Farcaster is the most interesting community if you look for web3 and crypto content. Lens doesn't seem to be a social network but something different and Bluesky is like an initial Twitter but not interesting by now
Can't speak for the latter three, but I have been enjoying the more professional, calm demeanor of those casting far and wide here. Certainly compared to the bird app, which (before I started weeding out) can be not very positive. Love it here. Thank you for asking and all You and Devs do for the world 💚
Farcaster: Calm techie Bluesky: Angry techie Lens: Degens Mastodon: Redditor that never used Reddit Twitter: Low EQ Threads: Mainstream
Can only speak to my experience: Farcaster: More signal than noise. Bullish sentiment towards ecosystem of apps that allow for a more customized experience. Bluesky: Twitter refugees looking for a less toxic twitter experience. Bullish on dev vibe building out AP protocol. Experimenting w/ new container experiences
is this posted on lens and the other platforms as well? Would love to see opinions of other platform users as well
bluesky was nice but I didn’t vibe with any direction, haven’t tried mastodon nor found a reason to use lens diligently, Twitter is more than FC but the concentration here was useful
Farcaster: earnestposting Bluesky: shitposting Lens: airdrop farmers Twitter: dumpster fire Mastodon: HOA of the internet Threads: brandposting
Farcaster : ppl talk about stuff they do or like Lens : 98% spam(airdrop farmers) 2% try get airdrop by create original content
Here's my cynical take on this: https://warpcast.com/thefaketomato/0x47d3c0
Haven't used bluesky or mastodon. Lens is okay but I like browsing Farcaster more. Curious to hear your answer 👀
People who are on all 4 have zero life and way too much free time… Farcaster is where more of the “cool kid” and & open minded freaks and geeks hangout. Whereas, ultra vocal crackpot survivalists tend to flock to mastodon, blue sky and lens (in order of orthodoxy)
Guessing all of the alts except fc are trash atm because of the flood of “spaceship man bad” people
California web2 tech on Bluesky Libertarian crypto culture on Farcaster (quite natural, as gas fees filter out people without some Eth connection)
FC: builders, Ethereum, culturally US-centric (even though not everyone is from there), financially better off Lens: more creators, more diverse, one has to actively establish new social graph and engage with it, if not danger of ghost town feeling Mastodon: not really active there, more serious Bluesky: no account
Lens went downhill after airdrop twit. But UI/UX is better, they are more mature and have different app running live from image to text to Video. Farcaster is scalling up, apps are in dev and community is more wholesome and alligned towards eth ecosystem. other two i havent used, yet. None is ready of masses.
What are your thoughts on Hive it always seems to be left out of these discussions
Three buckets: https://pgrph.xyz/@papajams.eth/web3-social-a-ux-first-approach
vs Phaver There are an incredible number of interesting people in this social environment. NFT-lovers, drophunters, degens. But a lot of people just want a free Lens profile …
Simple vibe check -> BlueSky: @vbuterin.bsky.social Threads: @24568 Twitter: @VitalikButerin Mastodon: @[email protected] Lens: @vitalik.eth Farcaster: @varunsrin.eth (could've been)
