The prevailing narrative until yesterday was Farcaster needs to grow faster / be more aggressive with DAU growth. Gave invites to Active Badge holders only and now the feedback is feed quality is bad. We will solve for the near term this week but good reminder permissionless will bring new challenges. :)
FWIW I love it - feels fresh even if I'm not a fan of all the new folks joining. Takes time to break something right.
“Just selectively target high quality groups” That was the original onboarding strategy and resulted in a ton of churn. The retained active users on Farcasters aren’t from a single community. More a similar profile: people creating new things, optimistic and civil, interested in Ethereum.
FWIW, I think my gripe was more oriented around channels cluttering my feed Of course, I think it's important to remain conscientious of UX on the client side as the protocol scales Though my comments collaterally attacked new users, which was wrong User growth will make the protocol and apps better 👍⚡️
@dwr reminding everyone that... “Customers are always beautifully, wonderfully dissatisfied, even when they report being happy and business is great.” — Jeff Bezos
In my opinion it should get as free as possible in the future - noise in the feed is tautological. I guess there are two complementary ways: - current users can bring value - improving feed algorithm
No complaints here. If FC is going to become a first tier option, everyone needs to be here. I don't need the protocol to guard/curate my feed. Just like life, people are widely divergent and we navigate accordingly. I'm glad to see more web3 folks here. Imagine what it will be like when the normies arrive!
I have noticed a pretty steep decrease in quality since i joined 16 hours ago
Appreciate the invites! Wonderful to get a new batch of artists and friends here :)
If we all just accept that this is a giant, and fun, experiment, then it will be a lot easier to laugh at the missteps and then find the new path forward Imagine the vibe to a new person when they realize it's okay to experiment and the world doesn't need to end when the app tries new things
I don’t think its bad at all. Does it need some tweaks? Maybe but overall I enjoy. People will always complain about something. You can’t please everyone.
feed quality feels alive excited w the new users confident you’ll be able to solve the challenges w a larger userbase
I posted on twitter about having invites to share, and the number bot like accounts that spammed my inbox is uncanny! So can validate that getting in random folks we definitely degrade feed quality and spam a lot of folks!
I think not to bad, But if that's what most users say, it's best to follow their suggestion 😅
That’s inevitable I guess. How do you plan to solve this challenge? Lens protocol had similar issue and their approach to solve actually hurt active (net positive) members of the community
Tooo soon bru Tooo soon to have sufficient quality of data for bad feed / content data. Let the tendrils grow a bit more
Loving the simplicity on this side! When will it be possible to sign up for @farcaster without invites @dwr?
Honesty and transparency will always outweigh close minded, non-adaptive approaches. Thanks Dan!
Give it time, things will sort out eventually. On balance, I’d rather have a much more active community (especially active artists on here) with a slightly lower signal-to-noise ratio than high signal-to-noise ratio with much lower activity. And we’re nowhere *close* to the spammy clusterfuck that’s Twitter.
feed quality is better imo, everything was feeling static for the last month yeah there's some random spam but this is the internet, anyone complaining about it has unrealistic expectations of what a growing social platform is going to look like bring on Farcaster eternal September
I feel it takes time to understand the vibe and get acclimated. FC is not like the others.
I mean, if Farcaster is going to be a viable alternative to web3 twitter, then web3 needs to be here. With all the good and bad.
Barring few, not all newcomers would be spammers. Also restricting user growth can be detrimental to our platform. Just 2days back twitter changed rule and faced backlash from active user. We should be careful what we are doing for our platform.
I dont have many friends here yet or much engagement so im happy to bring some to the party
Net positive, I can always turn back on the spigot with @ncbot when I feel like it
It’s inevitable for any product to move away from the initial go to market. Keep at it for growth @dwr
I love the new users, things on the feed were starting to feel repetitive but the new content coming in is good.
perhaps channels should be gated and those gated communities can solve quality for themselves?
Imagine the creator of e-mail caring about the quality of the emails sent. Open it up. Create the features You want in WC and let the rest of us party ons. ✌️ Not meant to dissect the public good and contribution you’re all making. It’s yours to decide. For Life.
I'm not sure where you are getting feedback from. It feels about the same but more lively. Farcaster is either for everyone or specific group of OGs with their culture & what they consider "quality content". Obviously it is refreshing there are very few bots here. But I can't see any difference "quality content".
my feed seems fine, but i'm also fairly new (however i was here prior to the invites given out). maybe people need to curate their following instead of mass following everyone?
I love to see people from different communities. It's more vibrant that way. New people bring new things with them.
I believe slow growth is better. The rush for mainstream adoption is what kills most good things :-(
It doesn’t seem like anyone thinks the feed quality is bad https://warpcast.com/survey/0x87ce6e
Permissionless would bring an insane amount of users/bot/farmers. There is no way to avoid it, best we can do it to encourage good behavior
Feel it’s probably more of a blend of new users taking a little time to adapt instead of treating it like the Twitter downward spiral
We need the option to Follow people without them being in our feed, I think. There's lots of people I like but don't necessarily need to see every post from.
Might be transatory though since people might have to experience/ get used to the different vibe the farcaster community is on :) Since most come from twitter it for sure will take a bit to get used to the more personal, non-shilling atmosphere
isnt the whole point of farcaster so that we can build different clients? i feel like you’re talking about two different things here: growing the protocol vs. client side issues - warpcast. correct me if i’m wrong
You’ll never get me to throw away twitter. Train me to at least check this daily. And if I enjoy that, the seed is planted.
I honestly haven't seen my feed quality change all that much. Then again, I've been a little inactive for the past week or so.
Curious if there are additional feed curation ideas and tools that could be developed and tested…@ccarella maybe a Purple Prop House idea?
What is considered crap? I share my content and literally no one interacts. You just want lines if code or something? 😂
I don't Unfollow because I don't want to lose the contact. Most follows are first or only an "add to contacts". I want an "add to contacts" that puts them in discovery tab, from which they percolate to my main feed once I start interacting with their casts. Can similarly have the reverse. Make unfollow less scary.
I didn’t complain 🫠 I just want to bring my friends here but no one wants to leave Twitter, I feel everyone is being held hostage by their follows and followers
Yeah impossible to make everyone happy, fwiw, it’s been exciting seeing all the new sign ups. The feed is going to take time
How about we verify people with a check mark and charge them a subscription, then we limit how many posts they can see… oh wait!
If you recall twitter in 07/08 we had the same thing. It was just the “SxSWesties” on twitter. They wanted “more users” then complained when the “non tech” people jumped on. 1. It was the minority complaining but being loud about it, and 2. It worked itself out. The solution is more tools, not less peeps.
I would like to register the fact that I have been dubious of that prevailing narrative https://warpcast.com/nor/0x0239f9
we need subreddits for farcaster. communities will self organize and people will find their people global feeds will always be a mess
not complaining, but but someone i know got so many invites and i just got one ☹️
