Love the instinct, but I think this really often turns into a harassment vector for asymmetric power interactions (ultra vitriol from hate follows finally leaving or offended formerly followed parties retaliating)

Absolutely! Still want it. As a matter a fact, you can’t unfollow the person after following them until counter party accepts the unfollow feedback.
