i tried solving this by following nearly all channels, but that doesn't seem to surface the community i follow nearly as well as before.

But that community is still here! Whether it's a channel or a new, early-user only client (or filtering mode for a client like @supercast), totally possible, esp. since the network is 100% permissionless.
