one thing i will say is we want to move in the direction of letting communities fund meetups—and in that case, they will want some proof that attendees were actually there 

so the situation i’d be worried about selfishly is less about non-attendees, but rather the organizer colluding *with* attendees

it's a fair choice, either way is opinionated.
but from my POV, ticketmaster is offputting enough, and regardless of event format, attendees should have an alternative, nonfinancialized outlet for FOMO. again, just imho.
