He’s not a “good” writer by conventional standards, though he has his sublime bits, but he’s essential in some way. He is to speculative fiction what LA is to cities. A prototype of the future and a breakpoint from the past.

In a way he killed SF as a category and replaced it with protocol fiction by 1980 but nobody noticed.
