I had yet another convo with normie friend about the awesomeness of farcaster and found myself dipping my voice when I mention crypto, waving my hands around to say “it’s not a scam! Well you just have to avoid certain areas..” Feels like I’m explaining an up and coming neighborhood (which is also a bit wrong)
So the topic for discussion is how y’all web3 natives are dealing with that (or not) bc it feels like.. such a shame to be embroiled and every time I see a new coffeezilla with the latest crypto scam I wince Oh the other feeling is the model minority one, or when I try to tip extra to undo stereotypes 😰
i think we need to figure out a way to talk about Farcaster without discussing crypto. think about credit cards or Apple Pay — no one brings up the technology, just the value prop. neighborhood may be a bit wrong but imo more accurate than crypto :)
the tricky thing is that the more you explain it, the more expectations the other person has
I do not feel that anymore. Where necessary, I just explain what infrastructure is in general, & relate to the internet as a concept in a couple of friendly sentences, then introduce crypto-economics/ -systems as a thought-line, & introduce Farcaster— & in normie-speak. if the person makes me defensive, i just stop.
I usually use the comparison of "owning your network" vs not on other socials. "Imagine if your email list were portable as followers on other social networks, and vice versa"
Like describing Times Square “it used to filled with con men & hookers but now there’s Disney musicals and Krispy Kreme — you’ll love it!” sounds about right. I say Farcaster is a community of builders & creatives working on the next generation of the internet. At least that’s why I like it.💜
Yes crypto does have a bad reputation everywhere, I do think we will have to deal with it until we make a better product than what the scams did to the people
My go-to heuristic to describe Warpcast is that its twitter minus the toxic aspects. While not entirely true, getting people to envision something they are at least passively familiar with goes a long way to bypass the crypto aspect to start. I'll always talk up the quality of people & conversations here over the tech.
