imo friendtech is the worst omen for social and society. my #1 critique of social is that it’s turned us into dopamine addicts, consumed by competition, constantly projecting an image for others moreso than for ourselves. friendtech takes this and… financializes it? and some of us are excited by it? i’m out.

If it makes you feel any better, the friendtech UI is garbage, so the dopamine hit you get from using it is pretty limited. Aside from the financial aspect, there's no real incentive to use it. I don't see it lasting for long.

Did you ever use bitclout? This cast is a much better description of that iteration of this concept For me personally, Friend.tech is more about supporting friends and having fun then it is a financial game (not that can’t be your main focus or purpose for using the app)

Yeah, not great. However, the concept of investing in and supporting people you think are gonna “make it” is something I can get behind, and that’s why FaZe Banks is excited about it.

I like seeing it as a tipping point. "The marketplace for your friends" must be the cosmic joke shown to us in front of our eyes so that we can finally say... It's time to do better.

it's DOA for the simple fact that injecting ETH into the system is still a huge hurdle most people can't/won't overcome. It feels like it's a "thing" in the same way Threads did.

I think the protocol is interesting, the current algorithm is a big strong, but if toned down a little bit with actual utility and less speculation there could be a useful product here.

Friend tech actually very related to your cast a few weeks back critiquing Balaiji’s dystopian bent… Blockchains enable many wonderful and terrible things… the future depends on what we build

It may not be the ideal version of crypto, Web3 social, nor society overall, but it's an interesting experiment that involves how crypto is mostly being used now (speculation) to bootstrap how it may be used more widely later (financially supporting individuals).

Your take and @hillis are both spot on. This app, like any social app de jour all follow the same patterns. A meteoric rise in initial interest, followed by a lull where degans control the narrative until the ratio of degans to average users is askew. https://twitter.com/JonathanHillis/status/1692882390077567139?s=20

I understand the criticism of FT from the point of view that noobs with get rekt by another ponzi But in terms of an omen for social it’s the purest form of what web3 always raves about - that building a following financially benefits you & value is not owned by the platform. And as an experiment that’s fun to see

Yeah, I don't really know yet. I've dipped my toe, but I'm not sure I 'get' it. I'm exploring if this can be an income stream for me as a creator, but I currently fail to make that work. Not sure this time that I am the issue with that.

whenever i have strong moralistic views against a new popular idea as i did with BitClout and now FriendTech, i get a knee jerk reaction of feeling somewhat defeated, that we are growing further and further apart from the things that matter. but…

I see this but there is a burning hole in the middle of the social media scene today and we need a good lever to pull people off twitter. Farcaster is slow and niche, lens has been impossible to get into, and I really hate thinking Elon is getting paid everytime I leverage that social graph.
