Planning a family trip to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in December! Any recs (food, hotels, activities, things to see) or nearby cities we should also check out while there?

Sunrise hot air balloon in the desert outside of Dubai was really cool

Would highly recommend Al Badayer Retreat (30min outside Dubai). They have great activities and food in the desert! Not to mention how beautiful it is. FYI they are a dry Emirate so bring your own alcohol.

Depending on the age of the kids, Atlantis the waterpark is a lot of fun.

Louvre Abu Dhabi: an exhibition was meh, but the building is a piece of art. The Dubai Fountain show near Burj Khalifa: must see. It’s a proper ballet for light and water. I’d also recommend an evening boat trip around Dubai Marina.
