Every January I mark all of my credit cards as lost so they issue me fresh physicals & rotate the card numbers. I then get barraged by emails from companies that tried to charge me a recurring subscription on the now defunct card. This helps me cut down on unnecessary subscriptions that accumulate during the year.

This is wonderful. ...but if you *did* want a more elegant solution, Rocket Money's recurring charges/subscriptions management engine is decent.

I've seen subscriptions charged to expired cards. Is it different when a card is marked lost?

So on the company side usually if you pay an extra 5bips you can get the updated card information and not have this issue.

For unwanted subscriptions I use virtual cards (using Revolut). Only first payment is accepted then card is destroyed.

From my experience, I’ve had card companies simply transfer the debit to my new card automatically. The only way to evade the re-occurring debit is to contact the business. Overall I like the idea in theory.

I just have a massive numbers spreadsheet that lists all my upcoming subscriptions and bills and then whether or not I have enough money for the month etc.
