People new to a social network start with no followers, resulting in low visibility of their content, almost to the point that it's irrespective of how high quality or interesting their post is. They cast 1-3 times, get no responses and few likes than and then often leave. How can we improve this? Some ideas below

1. Nudge new casters to create a better first cast to increase the likelihood it gets out of the void. Clients or welcomebot can suggest initial casts from a template 2. Default feed ranking algorithms taking into consideration someone's organic reach or past cast quantity. 3. Amps over follows should help a bit

I think a /new feed is very important. It's how hacker news & reddit bubble up great content.

I’m not sure this is a problem. When u start out you have 0 followers so if u r getting a lot of engagement it’s gonna feel fake/manipulative like TikTok

I’m in this boat. I check fc infrequently because content is sparse and I get near zero engagement vs Twitter. Unless you’re famous, the FTUE leaves here a lot to be desired

It's all about engagement I think. If it feels like you are talking to no one then it doesn't matter what you post. If you get engagement you can start learning the culture and post more interesting things.

I joined around the time of the “how i meditate“ thing and that was cool. Maybe something like @ncbot that surfaces a rotating easy-to-jump-on bandwagon meme/prompt

Would love a /welcome feed for a user’s first few posts to get visibility

we need better "stumblethru". people should be able to randomize a fast-forming queue of sites from arbitrary criteria. been thinking about this: stumblethru(yt_shorts + tiktok) > tiktok fyp? also a source of major friction in twitter scroll, often lose a potential post if not following & reflexively refreshing.

SocNets typically have Highlights or paid Premium boosts but they never have mechanisms for going into the dark alleys or deep waters So first movers get the advantage and it’s a diminishing rate of returns for new users that don’t have an established audience elsewhere

I’d love a /new feed, similar to the highlights feed

Would be fun to welcome people in groups of say 100 in a cohort: > Welcome to FC! You’re a part of High Sierras, a welcoming club of 99 other new joiners. Start some conversations and add to others as and tag folks in the interesting convos you find along the way

Building a recast culture will stop the bleeding for a bit. Having easy to access examples of the “best” content on FC will help newcomers learn norms faster - especially around what constitutes a “successful” cast since the numbers are such a different order of magnitude The reality is though…

While new casters who make high quality content don’t have distribution feel bad that their good casts don’t crush it usually, most of the new casts are actually pretty bad 😂 Most content on ALL social platforms is bad - all “good” content is specific to platform context which most people don’t pay attent

Maybe asking for some interests and key words a person wants to hear from? I also love the idea of /new feed.
