I’ll double down on my original prediction: Threads is a dud.

The problem with threads is that they are boring because people don’t know how to write them. They are their own thing not a stupidly formatted essay

Woke up this morning. Saw threads was a thing. Logged on and didn’t see much interesting or new, but they did reference Mastedon in the onboarding process. First thought “what does Dan Romero think.”

threads is for people who aren’t hot enough to be instagram queens and who aren’t intellectual or productive enough to be twitter kings trying to combine the mid leverage they have between the two to foster relevance. in that way it feels like an unimaginative and extractive social factory for clout chasers.

Clearly so. Surprising that Zuck allowed a product to be launched with very poor thought. They didn’t consider picking the right initial network at all it seems.

In reply to @dwr

I'm interested in how they lean into their social graph tech. Got to imagine they can leverage all the data they have to create interesting concentric circles around powerful influencers. Maybe they can identify them from past behaviors on IG. Also, I'm not sure what will happen. Zuck seems surprised.

There's something reassuringly comforting about @dwr doubling down on this prediction. May it be so! (corporate network effect → instant high-water mark → snore! 🥱)

My hunch is that Threads is here to stay. I think the ability to import an existing social graph is huge - better feed, better recs, etc. In my first 10 minutes on the platform I re-connected with friends who never made it to Twitter. Also, integrations with other fediverse platforms has a lot of potential.

I don’t think so. It has potential to dethrone Twitter now that Elon started f*cking with it by limiting users how much tweets they can see, etc. I’m officially bearish Twitter for the first time since I joined back in 2009.

I am mostly with this - the one thing that gives me pause is Threads ability to indefinitely retarget people on instagram. (Kinda what they did with IG Stories) Do you think the ability to retarget will make a difference? (Basically, come back when we have better content for you)

I’d say it’s an instant success right now. What determines if it survives is what they optimize the feed around, and how much control they give to users to configure their feed. If it stays as a bunch of 20m+ follower influencers saying vapid things I don’t think it will last

How do we define dud? I think what’s interesting to me about the potential of Threads is how they might handle virality. If they have some drama or viral moments that are worth reporting on beyond the fact that they are growing, that’s when maybe it steals the limelight from Twitter.

regular people just want to know apps work. and by all accounts, threads not only works. it works well. regardless of where they borrowed? stole? their ideas from. they went for LCD. will move their IG audience there. and then iterate. it's here to stay.
