what gatekeepers do you think are good, actually? what conditions make for a “good” gatekeeper?

Such a tough question. Gatekeeping in itself is a “dirty” word. I do think people want to operate with other people in a regulated env. As in, I want to do business with another business that is a legal entity (makes things easier). This is gatekept by governments.

i like dan as the fc gatekeeper rn. maybe the generalized version of this statement is: gatekeeping is "good" when there's a lot of noise and you want a trusted source for signal

Gatekeepers reduce negative variance, i.e. prevent you from hurting yourself. But when doing so also reduce +ve variance. So gatekeepers are good when people would get hurt if left to their animal spirits. Good gatekeepers: are sensitive to when they are reducing -ve variance and when they are preventing +ve variance
