have you ever noticed that when someone tells you about their product / company that failed you're more likely to think it's a good idea that someone's current product / company? Why is that?

Maybe because that’s why they are telling you. It was the fish that got away which makes it worth mentioning. Or maybe all ideas come from the collective so to speak. Many people are thinking along the same lines, solving the same issues. My guess is the next big product will have had many others that lost the race.
