A lot of talk about web3 advertising. Feel like I should put a video out on this — seems to me that the most critical thing to have a durable business is to have a media surface that target customers check multiple times a day.
at the risk of overly simplifying this, advertising systems are basically a combo of 3 things: 1. inventory — number of ads * audience 2. data — how you know who to show the ads to 3. tech — how your system sells, shows and learns about ad serving and performance
Appreciate this perspective. Onchain (what everyone can see) is tough, offchain must come into play. We’re approaching this by allowing users to extract their web2 data from sites they already use, package it in decentralized form, sell it back to businesses. Web3 advertising could work here.
A big, missing piece of the puzzle: You need advertisers who can generate a positive economic return on an ad, which requires a product that can turn $10 ad spend into >$10 return, enabling the flywheel that can sustain the ads platform itself. The lack of positive economic advertisers is the biggest blocker imo
The biggest challenge I can see is the lack of large publishers (supply side) in web3. Since we haven’t needed the extra APRDAU in successful products there’s been no rush/demand yet for solutions. There’s a ton of pent up demand from advertisers though.
