Still haven’t worked out if ‘taking myself seriously’ is a signal of maturity or immaturity - said from the perspective of my mid forties - interested to hear the view of my fellow casters

Like this. Context-specific I think. It changes the tone. Overall, maturity, because it indicates awareness of the usual ‘not too seriously’ and skewers it. (From a kid I’d think it strange, for some reason.)

I'd argue having serious goals but not taking yourself too seriously is optimal

I've had jobs making six figures a year. I also just recently stepped away from my career of 12 years. For what? To live in a van and travel the country. Essentially living poor, without much income. I've never been happier. I'm also just about 40. Live your life Chris, have all of the fun, you won't regret it.

Seems to be one of those things that can be judged on a case by case basis.
