Hypothesis: No successful platform ever makes it beyond v2. Transitioning the user base from v1 to v2 is painful, and then exponential user growth on v2 makes v3 a pipe dream. Lots of platform friends (us included!) are now forever on APIv2.

While there are lots of flaws with the banking system, this specific one seems preferable to a lost seed phrase.
