There really are characters on reality tv who act like they’ve stepped out of a South Park episode
One day we will meet for the final battle of energy beams shooting out of our hands and meeting in a plasma ball in the middle.
I have found my true deadly nemesis. Guy in house buying-remodeling show whose every second phrase in “mid-century modern” As in “Did you mid-century modern hear the mid-century modern news about the Silicon Valley bank?”
What’s with all the old-timey generic brand names these days? Browser Company, Boot Company… It’s like the leftovers of the v-commerce boom decided to go Old West
Sloppy AI supremacists use extrapolation based on 1 and 2 to conclude 3. It’s a flat-earth type inference.
There are 3 senses of generality people conflate: - Mathematical generality (universal as in turing machines and function approximators) - general as in Heinlein “specialization is for insects” quote - general as in omniscience/omnipotent like a god
I really dislike the conflation of “human equivalent” and “general” and their interchangeable use as adjectives for intelligence but I may have to give up that battle. Not a hill worth dying on. Call it AGI and confuse yourself if you want.
I think AIs have reached p-zombie hood. https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.12712
I’ve mostly given up meeting new people without a specific reason tbf and almost never do larger meetups now.
Mildly curious how younger readers discovering my decade-old stuff now seem to refer to me as “ribbonfarm” Possibly a generation gap thing or simply an artifact of me being much less sociable now. In 2011-14 I was actively doing blogger meetups, so got to know a lot of people personally.
almost certainly not back to the city proper... probably eastside or north
I'm genuinely tired of moving around so much... 26 years, 22 apartments, 8 cities, 7 states... le tired
Really not looking forward to the move, it will be a logistics nightmare for a variety of reasons. But looking forward to finally being moved. I like LA enough, but it's not a candidate for long-term.
Okay, firmly decided to move back to Seattle this summer. Ideally in June 😬
In a way he killed SF as a category and replaced it with protocol fiction by 1980 but nobody noticed.
He’s not a “good” writer by conventional standards, though he has his sublime bits, but he’s essential in some way. He is to speculative fiction what LA is to cities. A prototype of the future and a breakpoint from the past.
Is it a good or bad sign that J. G. Ballard has been my source of sanity this year? 🤔
They usually do and it’s crap. “First 500 responses will be entered to win!”
“Take this survey for a chance to win this gift card” has to be the world’s worst sales pitch.
lies, nonsense, misrepresentations, distortions Why no positive ones? I’m gonna produce a farrago of ideas, proposals, speculations etc
