What’s your answer to the famous Thiel question?
I always struggle with this, because I don’t actually know what everyone else believes… so which one of my opinions is contrarian? Lol
extremely difficult to have a truly contrarian opinion but weighted by importance, I think the US is not in decline
I was asked this in an interview and said “Plants have feelings, too.” Didn’t get the job.
Art is upstream of science, engineering, and design. Art drives culture, and culture is the operating system for civilization.
While we (humans) want to believe we can choose our fate, our primitives are not very yielding Ask yourself why you do what you do, and you’ll notice there’s a deeply innate reason you didn’t explicitly choose to have Acknowledging this is rather depressing, so we choose not to
I have many. One is that teachers are not underpaid, another is that for most of us worrying about global warming is a waste of time.
Earth is fucked unless we become a multi-planetary species and force most people to live somewhere else. Earth only survives as a nature preserve.
The question always makes me smile b/c the interviewer asking it isn't being contrarian at all - only Thiel can take credit for that

in all seriousness... the US educational system was designed to create compliant NPCs, and it was done so intentionally why else dont we teach compounding interest and public speaking?
"Follow your passion" advice to young people is incredibly unhelpful. "Passion" is a retrospective evaluation. Just do stuff you find interesting, get better at it, and then continue that loop. Then when you look back in 20 years, you'll realize that was your "passion."
venture capitalism is morality money laundering oil money, oligarchy, and exploitation funneled into founders who would never accept the money directly
We overanalyze health & wellness (mental & physical). 1) Discomfort, as experienced when pushing yourself to achieve something new mentally or physically, is healthy & humans can take a lot of it. 2) the more you pay attention to how you feel, the more problems you notice
The Star Wars prequels (1-3) are the best trilogy of the series. Most untarnished look into Lucas's vision. And I like the politics. Come at me!
Maybe not contrarian in certain circles but likely contrarian to some in North America: capitalism is a force for good, the associated negatives come from 1) revealed consumer preferences and 2) regulatory capture created by governments.
when asked online the question should be appended with ‘…that your willing to share publicly’ which means the *real* question your asking is what view do you hold that is both contrarian and acceptable to your current internet social circle? irl i have many, online i have few

It is no coincidence that micro investing platforms that "democratize" investment access are emerging at a time when young generations grow poorer.
Most people in bad situations in America have many enviable opportunities for improvement. Mostly culture problems that the state cannot fix. If you're born in the US you get life on easy mode.
Politicians have been aware of how unavoidable is nuclear energy for decades, but they don’t rule on its favor because of the intrinsic short-term focus of our current democracies.

maybe not that controversial. 80% of jobs (at least) can be eliminated without any noticeable impact to society. it follows that people should not work “to have a job” — our society is massively inefficient in labor/skill/practical output
reading non-fiction books often serves as an eloquent form of procrastination. people read them to feel they're doing something productive, but they'd get 10x better results if they implemented insights from one book instead of reading the next ten.
the first flag planted on Mars by a person won’t be the flag of a nation.
