Roam vs Obsidian vs Notion vs Apple Notes vs LogSeq vs...? What do people love/use? I've just started trying Obsidian, have spent significant amount of times with everything above.
What I’d love ideally is a Notion like native Mac and mobile apps, persist to .md files and git, published as a simple elegant website 📖 Does Obsidian fit that?
using notion, but have been trying to dedicate time to learn & migrate over to obsidian for moooonths -- it's so beautiful
Genuine question: why use Obsidian rather than say, VSCode markdown files? Is it just the linking capability, plugins, etc? What makes it worth it for you? I use vscode for riffing and a single google doc for long-term thoughts
Check out LYT on YouTube, it will really help in building a framework to get the best of it. I’m a pkm nerd who migrated from Evernote to notion to Obsidian (found my home here)
Apple Notes. Has everything you need, simple, free, etc. only bad thing is the yellow on white font color for links.
Is there an option to mass migrate your notes from OneNote to a more modern tool like Roam etc.?
Apple Notes - syncs across devices - locked notes - search is actually good
Apple notes all the way. The platform integration + habit built over years of using unstructured Apple Notes to jot things down quickly.
Drafts Around 80-90% of the text I write goes through Drafts. Such a good OG iOS app (and great Mac companion). farcaster://casts/0x...618588f958
Apple Notes - everything else has too much cognitive overload. But Bear has some nice design touches.
Notion for meeting notes, research and wikis Apple Notes for most everything else because of it’s lindyness
I have tried everything and have gone back to Apple Notes. Nothing beats the simplicity it offers.
Notion. Not perfect, but I just can't stand the design aesthetic of apple notes
Been giving LogSeq a try (with beta sync service) and I like it. Has a growing community, seems hackable, but the defaults are good enough.
Don’t sleep on standard notes. Hands down the best encryption and sync (Apple notes level) but open source. If I could hook logseq / obsidian into their sync engine it would be game over
Apple notes has been surprisingly good to use instead of notion with my cofounder. You can share notes and edit them together now
(Surprised by the number of Notion / Apple Notes replies; would be curious what replies to this q on Twitter would have looked like)
Tried many things, but keep coming back to Apple Notes. But then I'm the guy that does wireframes in Keynote.
I default to Apple Notes because it’s so quick and it feels like there’s less pressure to be structured. But once a week I take from my (messy) Apple Notes and move chunks into Notion regularly (structured notes for sharing). Bit of friction doing that though. Any tips from others?
Depends on how you like to think, and what you prioritize. Obsidian prioritizes offline performance, long term privacy/ownership of your data, and extensibility via plugins. For better and worse it’s designed to be less dogmatic, so that you can shape it to your needs.
Apple Notes is quickly becoming my go to. Tags were a good addition, and the ability to use my Apple Pencil on notes makes it super useful. Sync is immediate. I haven't tried Obsidian. Will look into it.
Apple notes for notes and quick information jots. Notion for long term projects and planning. Also use notion as a bookmarking tool for the browser.
For most stuff Apple notes is good, but if you want a snappy markdown editor for brainstorming and todos then obsidian, also don’t use the graph it’s a distraction tbh
I use Obsidian which works perfectly for my needs and can synch across multiple devices (this functionality has a small cost but worthwhile). The only downside for me is that I use Google Play Books for highlights. Unfortunately I was never able to find a plugin (or any other way) to integrate the two (FYI @kepano 👀)
how is obsidian on iOS? the roam ios app feels really slow, like a web view
- like to write in Obsidian - capture information in Tana - capture quick notes in Apple Notes - capture daily doodles in a little pocket notebook - structure workflows in Coda - sketch for present in tldraw - design in Figma Here are my notes in my pocket notebook today:
Apple Notes for group editing. Moved from Notion to bear 🐻 notes. Their newer version which is called Panda is really good.
If you're trying to do the zettelkasten / smart note taking method, Roam and Obsidian are purpose built for it
LogSeq here. My biggest complaint is the difficulty to write documents (ie non bulleted content). But I prefer bullet formatting for 90% of what I use it for. I'd use Apple Notes if it were scriptable.
Would be best to understand what you currently use/most common use cases. I think it’s more about creating the right infra for you and working backwards. I personally love smart blocks plug in on roam. It allows me to template routines, auto mental models and look back on decisions I’ve made with easy surfacing.
Standard Notes https://standardnotes.com/ It's my go to for all note-taking, even has a secure authenticator app as a Note template (so no need to use Authy/Google Authenticator)
Apple notes is convenient. I usually jot down my thoughts there and transfer over to Notion as I have a better knowledge structure there. I really tickle my OCD when I got to 0 Apple notes.
I've used Quip for years and find it works quite well for a my admittedly trivial use case (more here: https://www.adthappa.com/organization/). That said, I've heard interesting things about https://www.craft.do/ which seems to work well with the calendar integration.
